Orienteering is an outdoor recreational sport that involves using a map, compass, and written clues to navigate successfully a defined course. Beginners are welcome and instruction is available at all times. It’s a great family activity!

This year we had 14 teams with a total of 39 navigators — 38 humans and one canine — on Saturday, September 26. Three courses at Winston Tunnel ranged from 1.1 to 2.2 miles through hilly and forested terrain south of Galena. The intermediate and advanced courses included one station near the tunnel entrance. Completion times varied between 1 hour 44 minutes to 4 hours 50 minutes.

On Tuesday, September 29 River Ridge fifth graders (31 students with 8 adult guides) braved the advanced course and all returned after some exciting adventures. The list below includes all the teams for each course in order of the number of stations found and total time taken.
